I decided it might be fun to draw popular lady comic characters who looked equally as bored. Like - ho hum, I'm gorgeous and quite powerful and have stuff to do, but I'm waiting for the dryer to stop running before I can leave the house ... you know, so my house doesn't catch on fire and I lose all my awesome possessions.
So here's my next one - Harley Quinn! She's BEYOND bored ...

I'm chugging along with my next print project, so here's a peek at the next couple of Spirit Guides I've finished and have in the queue .... What's a spirit guide, you ask? Wellll, it's just my latest idea for a quirky way to celebrate some of my favorite characters, and package them in a portable medium that could be displayed anywhere! That way, people wouldn't have to deal with the age-old question floating around prints - to frame or not to frame? With these cute little hanging prints, they can dangle wherever suits your fancy!

I'm still not sure if I'm going to go ahead with the Sawyer and Anna Lucia and Herman Blume prints I talked about here. I love them as characters, but I'm not sure my drawings do them justice. I'm going to hold off on finishing them until I tackle some of these other characters that I've been dying to draw.
My first two Spirit Guides are done!
Since I want them to be portable and hangable, I glued the prints to thin sheets of wood, attached a piece of jute cord to the back ....
... and then I added just a few key qualities of the spirit guide to the back.

My latest idea for a fun project to work on, which capitalizes on my fondness for characters, is to create little mini Spirit Guides. I'm taking a bunch of my all-time favorite characters from movies and TV shows and re-imagining them as inhabiting certain qualities I wish I had, or just wish I had on a particular day. For example .... Here's Margot Tenenbaum.
She's someone I view not only as the mopey playwright created by Wes Anderson (whose style I drool over), but as someone who possesses certain qualities I wish I had. Sure, she's sneaky, purposefully vague, and not the most loyal. But she's also romantic, resourceful, and unabashedly enigmatic. She's found a way to control her misery in a way that remains appealing, as easily as she carves out spaces in her bathroom and a museum to be her private sanctuaries.
Each Spirit Guide I create will be colored, printed, and assembled similar to my Giles Print:
They'll be hangable, so they can be displayed wherever you need them. At work, at home, in the kitchen, in your gym locker, wherevs. I'll post the finished ones as I do them, but in the meantime here are some more characters I can't help but love ....

Totally obsessed with re-watching all of Wonderfalls lately. It contained so many qualities I look for in a show - eccentric characters, slapstick, plot twists, and of course, cute boys:

Well, to celebrate the return of my much neglected webcomic, Gods & Undergrads, on Tuesday, September 27th, I'm posting some pictures of what I recently re-discovered on my last trip home. At one point, I was so nerdy that I drew each of the Greek Gods, taped them to my wall (complete with name tags and icons of their attributes), and organized them into a family tree.
(no, this isn't the last time I would do such a thing - certain college photo projects involving real people as Greek Gods would come later - but I DIGRESS ...)

Whew! Quelle weekend! First things first - I'm starting to transition stuff over to a new Etsy store (one that has a more reasonable name than "Artemna", which is what my store is currently called), and I just placed my Mad Men Greek Myth prints up there! In a couple weeks there'll be nothing left in the Artemna shop, so come join the party over at LipsticKissPress!
I've got loads of news and updates and fun. But allow me to take a moment to gush about how wonderful all the people were who came by to stop and chat and purchase things at my table at the Baltimore Comic-Con were this weekend!
I usually don't like to harp on the fact that I'm a woman making comics (*gasp*!) but luckily for every douchebag that comes up to me and ridicules my stuff (especially Boobage - mature, right?), or asks me if I'm the comic artist's girlfriend, or just wants to take a picture with me but not read any of my stuff ... there are families, dads, moms, kids, teachers, fellow comickers, and comics fans who come by and make it all worthwhile. They tell me they identified with one of my awkward stories, enjoyed the gore of my assassin comic, or are as much of a Greek Myth nerd as I am. And that just puffs me up with happiness and makes me want to do so much more. So thanks, everyone!
The Greek God wrist cuffs were a HUGE hit, I'm so thrilled! I have more gods and designs and plans to do custom orders soon, so stay tuned!

I was raiding thrift shops in my neighborhood for a while, trying to find some perfect old picture frames I could repurpose into something cool and crafty, like all these great home improvement blogs I've been reading are always doing. I found a few, but mainly ones that required more work to revamp than even my imagination would lead me to believe I was capable of doing.
Then, I took a trip home and voila! My mom handed me boxes of old frames she no longer had use for:
Jackpot!
So I took a mixture of different sized/textured ones, sanded off as much of the gold as I could (oddly enough - pretty much ALL the frames I received from my mom are gold. Yes - she's decadent.) and then sprayed on a couple layers of primer and experimented with a few choice colors. Surprisingly, the paint took hold really well in spite of the gold, and (after rescuing all the dried frames indoors before a massive thunderstorm) I managed to fill them with a couple of my favorite prints.
A lot of them are white (especially the textured ones - I really like how the white worked with those) but there are a few turquoise and purple ones thrown into the mix too. The verdict? Fun for my prints, fun for the ol' frames, fun for the entire family. I'll be showcasing them this weekend at the Baltimore Comic-Con, and I'm sure I'll have loads more frame experiments in the future (seriously - BOXES of them).
